Fashion's Night Out: Boston style

September 8, 2010 |23:18 | General  By : Team X

My inbox is flooded with invites for all the great events taking place in New York City for Fashion's Night Out, the global shopping night that takes place on Sept. 10. Anna Wintour will sign T-shirts, the Olsen twins will judge karaoke, etc, etc... But what about Boston?

Fashion's Night Out: Boston style

There are just a few things happening in here. Neiman Marcus in Natick hosts a party from 6 to 9 with stylists, beer tastings, and trend presentations. Saks Fifth Avenue at the Prudential is going rock and roll with live music, a denim fashion show, and a 15 percent off shopping pass for the night. There are a smattering of other events that you can read about here. But it would certainly be nice to see more stores have fun with the night next year. Boston is not New York, but we have plenty of stylish and creative folks who could easily pull together some creative events.

War photographer Pellegrin takes a shot at fashion

September 7, 2010 |13:58 | General  By : Team X

Award winning photographer Paolo Pellegrin has documented many of the world's danger zones from Lebanon to Kosovo and Rwanda to Haiti.

In 1995, his stunning reportage on AIDS in Uganda received the World Press and the Kodak Young Photographer Awards.

The Italian-born snapper has published six books, of which -- "As I Was Dying" -- brought together his moving images of human suffering in war zones and in natural disasters.

Now, the 46 year-old Pellegrin, who joined Magnum in 2005, has curated and shot this year's edition of the photo agency's fashion magazine called "Storm."

The end result is a raw and ghostly vision of the future of our planet through a collection of eerie landscapes from New York to Iceland and Siberia and unconventional fashion shoots.

Teenage fashion: what's cool now?

July 16, 2010 |12:19 | General  By : Team X

They say spending time with young people keeps you young yourself. Rubbish. I've just spent a day with four teenagers, and I feel about 95. There is nothing like discovering exactly how ancient you appear to the youth of today to put paid to fanciful notions that one is still – as we said in my day – down with the kids.

Example. I asked Will Spratley, 15-year-old music and drama enthusiast, whose style he admired. He pulled out his copy of NME, and flicked to an article about Gorillaz. "I think Damon Albarn looks good," he said. And then he added, helpfully, "He's the lead singer of Blur." Thanks for the tip, son. Ouch.

To protect babies, keep car seats in the car: study

July 5, 2010 |12:20 | General  By : Team X

If the seat does have to come out of the car, said co-author Lindsay Wilson, parents should make sure their babies are always strapped in. Wilson and Dr. Shital Parikh, both from the orthopedics division of Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center, reviewed five years worth of data from a national U.S. surveillance system to find records of babies less than one year old that were taken to the ER for car seat injuries.

From 2003-2007, almost 2,000 babies in the sample - so about 43,500 in the entire U.S., the authors estimated - were brought to the ER for a car seat injury. Most of those injuries happened when babies fell out of their car seat or were in the seat when it fell off a table, counter or shopping cart.

Head or neck injuries were most common, especially in the youngest babies, who were also more likely to go to the ER. About half of the injuries happened at home. There were only a few car seat-related deaths recorded in the authors' sample, so they weren't able to calculate a national estimate.

Modelling not a dark world, its all about personal choices. With former supermodel Viveka Babajee committing suicide, the fashion industry is again in the news for all the wrong reasons. Experts and the fashion fraternity, however, feel that the incident is not a reflection on the industry but on how you personally deal with a situation.

According to psychiatrist Sanjay Chugh depression can hit anyone at any point in time, at any stage in life. "It perhaps gets more noticed amongst certain sections or groups due to one`s social status in society. It has nothing to do with a specific profession," Chugh told reporters.
