'Sex and the City 2' inspires local fashion, events

May 26, 2010 |10:32 | Fashion Events  By : Team X

I've been counting the minutes for the "Sex and the City" sequel to come out since, well, the first movie ended. I, like many fashionable women, am obsessed with the "Sex and the City" characters. Carrie, Miranda, Samantha and Charlotte came into our lives in 1998 on the hit HBO series "Sex And The City," and while the show ended in 2004, the fashionable four never really left us.

Pak Fashion Week

April 12, 2010 |11:13 | Fashion Events  By : Team X

Pak Fashion WeekIt’s a Paris-Peshawar mix. The second Pakistan Fashion Week that opened in Karachi on Monday seemed to defy the general perception of Pakistan being a conservative society.

Models baring shoulders and navels, sashayed down the ramp in tantalising togas, embroidered cocktail dresses, flowing georgette kurtas and — in the words of a Facebook critic — ‘sexy kaftans’, to showcase works by 52 designers.

“This time, my collection will be dark, and very gothic,” says Umar Sayeed, one of Pakistan’s top designers whose show will close the Fashion Week. Notwithstanding its reputation as a city on the edge, Karachi is a typical cosmopolitan metropolis with a bustling fashion scene. Though largely conservative, the street wear is getting provocative.

Pakistan fashion week begins as bombers hit northwest

April 6, 2010 |11:33 | Fashion Events | Fashion Shows   By : Team X

Pakistan began a new fashion week with an opulent opening ceremony in Karachi on Monday, hours after Islamist militants killed 46 people in bomb attacks in the northwest. Participants held a one-minute silence to mourn the five people killed in a suicide car bomb and gun attack at the US embassy in Peshawar and 41 who died in a suicide attack at a political rally in the district of Lower Dir.

The event is scheduled to feature 52 designers -- 49 of them from Pakistan and one each from Malaysia, Sri Lanka and the United Arab Emirates -- in a follow-up to a first event held in Karachi last November. "The fashion week has started and will continue until Friday," organiser Tehmina Khaled told AFP.

"Security concerns keep designers and models from the West away from Pakistan, yet we have succeeded this time to get some professionals from Asia to participate," Khaled said. "On the one hand terrorists are attacking our country with bombings and on the other, by organising events like this, we are trying to portray a softer image of Pakistan abroad," she added.

Evan Biddell throws out the rules

March 31, 2010 |12:04 | Fashion Events  By : Team X

Evan Biddell throws out the rulesEvan Biddell gave the Canadian fashion industry what they've come to expect - the unexpected. The designer took his show last night at Toronto fashion week in a new direction, literally, by having his models pose sideways on the catwalk for photographers. "The collection had a lot of angles and I wanted to share the profile that the audience sees," says Biddell.

It's wasn't always pleasant -- but that's exactly the effect the designer was looking for presenting bulbous-backed outfits and pants featuring fin-like scalloped detailing.

"Why do we have to go with conventional silhouettes? I had a lot of fun making fun of thunder thighs, love handles and hunch backs -- but I wanted them to look luxurious."The fall-winter collection, titled "Prehistory," featured green metallic pleather, black neoprene and cork, and industrial finishes with accents of metal snaps and bolt buttons.

March 26, 2010 |17:06 | Fashion Events  By : Team X

Move over ethnic chic, the fashion high street is looking at smart western cuts for the autumn-winter season. The look at the the Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week -- which opened in the capital Thursday -- is essentially global and innovative with Indian bling and a social conscience.

As the market recovers from a downturn and business picks up pace, designers are expecting a surge of new chain store buyers from the Middle East and even Europe to keep the domestic fashion segment afloat. The clothes, said a wide cross section of designers, have been influenced by business trends.

“My clothes for the fall-winter line are contemporary with lots of layers and textures. They are not ethnic chic though I have used Indian fabrics like brocades at the cuffs of my jersey suits and two-ply and three-ply silks for my evening dresses, boyfriend jackets and wrap-around outfits. The focus is on extended shoulders props and heavy Indian accessories that are really big and bling,” designer Ranna Gill told IANS.

Paris ready-to-wear heats up

March 6, 2010 |15:58 | Fashion Events  By : Team X

Paris ready-to-wear heats upHere are today’s Backseat Birthday shout outs!SULTRY Amazons in negligees and jodhpurs and modern-day Nefertitis in identical blunt-cut black wigs skulked Paris' catwalk on Friday.

As the French capital's fall-winter 2010-11 ready-to-wear shows moved into an exhilarating day three.

Christian Dior designer John Galliano was out of the gates with a sexy equestrian-themed show that synthesized two of the luxury label's recent looks: riding gear and lingerie-as-outerwear.

Cropped tweed jodhpurs were paired with ruffle-y tops in whisper-light chiffon, and the girls pranced down the runway in stiletto-heeled riding boots that would certainly get you killed if you dared mount a horse in them.

At Lanvin, Alber Elbaz did it again, giving his hoards of fans yet more perfectly draped dresses, chic cocoon coats and big, square shouldered power suits to lust after. Sporting identical black wigs, with chunky wooden necklaces gleaming with rhinestone studs, the models had the raw, regal look of the ancient Egyptian queen, Nefertiti.

Fashion's New Muse - The CEO

March 4, 2010 |13:08 | Fashion Events  By : Team X

The fall 2010 collections may offer the best clothes for working women since Yves St. Laurent introduced the sleek "Le Smoking" pantsuit in 1966.In Milan, Gucci, Jil Sander, Etro, Marni, Dolce & Gabbana, Prada, Bottega Veneta and Aquilano Rimondi all showed elegant, classic versions of women's suits—tailored jackets with either pants or skirts to match. In New York, Marc Jacobs, Michael Kors and others did the same. Now it's up to the French—who are just starting nine days of runways shows in Paris—to shape the trend.

Fashions New Muse The CEO

It's hard to overstate how different the new suits are from the dominant styles of the past few years. Very recently—until about two weeks ago, in fact—being "matchy-matchy" was considered a fashion crime. Florals could be mixed with plaid and sable with denim. But a tailored jacket that matched its pants or skirt suggested a blind eye toward style. A key look was a dress worn with a cardigan, Michelle Obama-style. Now, it looks as if designers have moved on from the first lady to adopt Xerox Chairman Anne Mulcahy as a muse.

Ruffles, bubbles, bold shoulders among notable looks at Toronto Fashion Week

October 26, 2009 |14:53 | Fashion Events  By : Team X

Ruffles, bubbles, bold shoulders among notable looks at Toronto Fashion WeekThe curtain has come down on the latest edition of Toronto's LG Fashion Week where designers delivered their visions of spring and summer style in new collections.

Here is a sampling of some of the notable and recurrent looks spotted on the runway that may very well be nestled on store shelves or hanging from clothing racks in the near future.

The Ripple Effect: Ruffles were among the most popular and dominant flourishes accenting designs in the collections this season.

Designers made ample use of the fanciful folds in a big way - literally - to add touches of delicacy and volume that cascaded along shirt sleeves, flowed down dress fronts, encircled asymmetrical necklines and dotted hemlines.

All For One: From sexy shorts to asymmetrical cropped styles and draped dhotis, the jumper demonstrated its versatility as a stand-alone signature piece that could transition from casual day to dressed up for evening.
